Move Shoot Communicate

In 1854, Mare Island – a peninsula across the Napa River from Vallejo – became the site of the first U.S. naval station on the West Coast, used through multiple wars as one of the most active shipbuilding hubs of the Navy until its closure in 1993. During World War II over 50,000 workers were employed on the base, and now the former military structures, such as barracks, warehouses, and offices, sit dormant along the landscape.

Shot on film using natural light and often long exposures (up to 3 minutes), I wanted to capture the stillness, disarray, and textures in an environment at peace with slow decay.
